3. How can I talk to a prosecutor about my ticket?

Your ticket has a court date on its face. When you appear on that date, you will have an opportunity to speak to a prosecutor about your case. Please call 303-773-6033 if you cannot appear on that date. Failure to appear on your scheduled court date may result in criminal liability.

4. Why do I want to talk to a prosecutor?

Prosecutors represent the City of Greenwood Village and therefore cannot give defendants legal advice on their cases. Prosecutors can, however, provide defendants with different choices as to how defendants may handle their cases. One of these choices may be a plea bargain which is often a sentencing concession in exchange for a plea of guilty to the charge.

5. What if I cannot attend court on my scheduled date?

6. What is an arraignment?

An arraignment is the defendant's first appearance in court. At arraignment a defendant can do one of several things - plead guilty, plead not guilty, ask to speak to a prosecutor, or ask for a continuance to seek legal counsel.

7. How can I get information about my case?

Defendants have a right to receive relevant police reports and other materials regarding charges against them. All of this information is called "discovery." Discovery can be attained by requesting it in person from the Court Clerk’s Office. If there is a video or pictures in the case, defendants need to request a copy from the Greenwood Village Police Department.

8. I have been charged with not providing proof of valid insurance when the police contacted me. I did have insurance, I just didn't have my card with me. What should I do?

You should provide proof of valid insurance for the date you received the ticket. Please attempt to provide this proof before your court date in order to avoid further delays in your case. Please contact 303-773-6033 for more information.

9. I have been subpoenaed as a witness in a case, but I cannot appear. What should I do?

Please contact the Municipal Prosecutor's Office at 303-486-1598 as soon as possible. Failure to appear on a subpoena may result in criminal liability.

10. I am a victim in a case and would like restitution. What should I do?

Restitution may be awarded for actual monetary losses only. It is helpful to keep all information, including receipts, regarding restitution. Please contact the Municipal Prosecutor's Office for more information at 303-486-1598.

1. How Do I Contact Community Development

2. Do I need a building permit?

Commercial and residential remodeling and construction including all additions, structural changes and garage conversions to houses require a building permit. A building permit is also required for fences, retaining walls, and landscaping. Most plumbing, mechanical and electrical work require permits.

The best way to find out if you need a permit is to call us at 303-486-5783. The Building and Planning staff will assist you with your project and help determine if a permit is required. If a permit is required, it must be obtained prior to starting work on the project. Below is a sample list of projects requiring a permit.

A permit is required for:
New residential and commercial construction
Attached or detached garages
Additions to any structure
Interior remodeling which involves any change or modification/addition to framing or the mechanical, plumbing or electric system (including service upgrades)
Lawn sprinkler / irrigation systems
Replacing cabinets with framing modifications
Porches and decks
Concrete or flatwork (Including steps, porches, patios) - call for verification of proposed work
Swimming pools, hot tubs and spas
Windows
Accessory structures including sheds and fire pits
Fences, dog runs, gates and entry monuments
Changing existing plumbing fixtures
Roofing or repairs to an existing roof (in excess of 100 square feet)
Siding
Signs
Commercial telecommunications equipment including antennae and satellite dishes
Temporary uses - permits required for tents, portable generators, temporary signs, etc.

A permit is not required for:
Painting, carpeting, tile or hardwood floors
Changing cabinet faces
Replacing cabinets with no framing modifications

3. Why do I need a building permit?

Permits are required by state law to protect owners and the general public. The permit process ensures that the contractor is adequately licensed and the improvements are completed as indicated on the plans and in compliance with code.

4. How long does the permit process take?

If all of the required elements are submitted with a completed building permit application and the appropriate fee, it normally takes three to five business days. Projects requiring a written plan review could take approximately two weeks.

5. How much does a permit cost?

The building permit fee is based upon the total value of the project.

6. When do I pay for my permit?

Plan check fees for projects valued at $1,000,000 and greater are required to be paid upon submittal of the permit. All other permit fees are due when the permit is issued.

7. When does my permit expire?

Projects must commence within six months from the date the permit was issued. Work on the project may not be abandoned for more than six months at a time. Extensions may be requested by submitting a written request to the chief building official.

8. How do I know if a permit has been issued for construction projects in our neighborhood?

If a building permit has been obtained, it should be posted so that it is clearly visible from the front of the house or commercial project. If no permit is posted, you may call Community Development at 303-486-5783 with the address of where the work is taking place to verify that a permit has been issued.

11. What are the construction hours?

Monday - Friday: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

12. How can I obtain building plan copies?

Structural plans for commercial buildings are retained in Community Development. A request for information form can be completed in person, faxed to 303-773-1238 or mailed to 6060 South Quebec, Greenwood Village, Colorado 80111. Plans for commercial tenant finishes and residential buildings are only retained for six months.

13. Do I need an asbestos report?

Buildings or those portions of a building constructed prior to October 12, 1988, require an asbestos report.

14. How do I find out my property’s zoning?

The easiest way to find out your property's zoning is to either call the Community Development at 303-486-5783 or stop by our office.

15. How do I find my property lines?

Obtain a copy of your property's legal description (if you don't have a copy, you may be able to get this from the Arapahoe County Assessor's office or copy of the plat map for your subdivision). You may also want to hire a surveyor to reestablish your property corners and property lines for you.

16. What is a subdivision plat?

A subdivision plat is a survey of property, prepared by a licensed registered surveyor, describing the dimensions and location of lot lines, streets, and easements. A plat also establishes the lot, block, and subdivision name used in real estate transactions. A plat is a legal document complete with:
A drawing of the property boundaries
A written description of those boundaries
All easements and right-of-ways described by distance
A dedication statement
An owner’s certification statement

17. What is an easement?

Easements are areas of land under private ownership, which the other parties have a legal right to use for specific purposes. Easements frequently exist where public improvements such as utilities, drainage ways, emergency accesses, sidewalks, and bike paths cross private property.
In order to preserve their intended uses and to protect the improvements they contain, the city regulates construction in easements through contractor licensing and revocable permitting. Property owners are prohibited from locating structures in public easements and from otherwise obstructing access to or use of the easement.
Contractors installing utilities or other public infrastructure within an easement are subject to the same licensing and permitting requirements as would be applicable for work within a public right of way

18. Who owns the property next to me?

19. Where do I get information about the Comprehensive Plan?

The Comprehensive Plan is available online. It can also be purchased for $30 at the Community Development counter.

1. What happens if I miss my court date?

If you are scheduled for court and neglect to appear, you will receive a notice from the court providing we have your correct address. You will be notified of a new arraignment date where you will be required to appear before the judge. If you do not appear at the new date a warrant for your arrest will be executed by the court.

2. How Do I Report a Coyote Sighting or an Aggressive Coyote?

If you happen to see a coyote wandering in Greenwood Village, please call the Police Department at 303-773-2525. The Police Department is actively keeping record of coyote activity in the village, which will assist in managing the coyote population. If you encounter an aggressive coyote, dial 911.

3. Do I Need a Permit to Have a Parade or a Block Party?

The village does require you to fill out a street use permit application online anytime you would like to use a public roadway for an event. Call the Police Department at 303-773-2525 with questions.

4. How do I get my vehicle out of impound?

Please contact the Police Department (303-773-2525), to determine if there are any police holds on your vehicle. If your vehicle is able to be released, please visit the Police Department at any time to complete the paperwork. Be sure to bring your ID and proof of ownership, such as the registration. The Police Department can release the vehicle only to an individual whose name is listed on the vehicle registration.

5. How Do I get A Vehicle Identificaiton Number (VIN) Verification?

The Greenwood Village Police Department is available to perform standard VIN Verifications, DR2698 for RESIDENTS only. Please note the Greenwood Village Police Department only performs VIN Verifications not Certified VIN Inspections, DR2408. Please contact Colorado State Patrol at 303-239-4545 for more information regarding Certified VIN Inspections. The vehicle must be available for inspection at the time of the VIN Inspection and you must be able to provide proof of ownership, title or registration. Call the Police Department at 303-773-2525 to make an appointment. There is NO charge for Residents.

6. How Do I Apply for a Security Guard License?

Any Merchant Patrol Service company performing uniformed or armed protection services in the City of Greenwood Village is required to have a current Security Guard License. To apply for a Security Guard License, please complete the attached application and submit it along with $100.00 annual licensing fee, made payable to the "City of Greenwood Village." Also required is a copy of your companies surety bond, naming the City of Greenwood Village, as additional insured in the amount of $10,000.00. While the Greenwood Village Police Department does not issue individual guard licenses, we encourage you to utilize the Colorado Bureau of Investigations to conduct a criminal background investigation on merchant guard you may hire. Public Works Department

1. How do I report street or park maintenance needs?

Contact Public Works at 303-708-6100 or via email at webpublicworks@greenwoodvillage.com. Please have as much detail as possible regarding the location.

2. What if I cannot get my trash and recycling to the curb?

Republic Services offers a carry out service for any resident who may be physically unable to move their solid waste and/or recyclables to the collection area. In order to accomplish this, the trash and recycle bins must be accessible to the collection driver and cannot be retrieved behind fences, in backyards or in garages. Collection drivers will retrieve the waste and recyclables in the accessible area, empty into the collection vehicle and return the bin to the original area. The cost for a carry-out service from Republic Services is billed annually at a charge of $60 ($5 per month) and is made payable directly to Republic Services. If a resident qualifies under the American Disabilities Act, no charge for carry-out service will be applied.

3. What can I do with my yard waste?

If you as a resident have trimmed your trees and bushes, make sure they are cut into 10-foot sections or less and call for a Large Item Pick-up, phone number 303-708-6100, before placing them at the curb. Dirt, rock, sod, pavers, concrete, mulch and contractor (landscaper or gardener) generated waste are not acceptable for our pick-up service. You may find private haulers online or advertised in "The Villager."
