Month of Photography Reception

Saturday, April 6, 2019

Join us as we celebrate the Month of Photography with the exhibit "This is Not a Photo". In his piece “Ceci N’est Pas Une Pipe”, artists Rene Magritte points out the arbitrary relationship between an object and its name. This was Magritte's way of saying that, "an image is not be confused with something tangible". In this exhibit, “This is Not a Photo” three artists challenge what is considered a “photo”. Using photographs as a foundry, these artists work in non-traditional mediums like acrylic, steel and paint to push the boundaries of traditional photography. This exhibit will also feature a project from the students at Aspen Academy. Students partnered with guest photographer Jim Sidinger to create the "Home Project." Students explored the art the works of Jim Sidinger, Peter Menzel and Faith D'Alusio and then brainstormed a list of what "home" means. Students then went into their communities to take pictures of "home," which they used to create digital collages.
