The City is constructing a well, well house, and water distribution system in Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve to maintain the sustainability of the ponds and surrounding wetlands and to assist with irrigation for tree maintenance along the High Line Canal.
Project Timeline and Location
The well was drilled at the beginning of 2025, and the next phase is to construct the well house and water distribution system to the ponds, as well as an irrigation system along the High Line Canal.
Located near the well, the 15-by-17-foot well house will have 8-foot walls. The irrigation system will be installed along the High Line Canal to water the new trees from Belleview Avenue down to Orchard Road, east of Jackson Street.
Construction is scheduled to start between mid-January and early February. The High Line Canal Trail is expected to remain open for most of the construction, with only a few brief closures as needed to ensure safe equipment passage. Construction is expected to be complete by the end of summer, weather permitting.
We kindly ask trail users to exercise caution when travelling in this area during the construction period.
Project Benefits
The Marjorie Perry Nature Preserve and the High Line Canal are two treasured natural amenities in The City of Greenwood Village. What were once used as farm ponds that the City acquired with the land, the ponds in the area now provide a rich ecosystem for wildlife and surrounding wetlands.
In 2023, the City purchased water rights to ensure the sustainability of these ponds, replacing evaporative losses and providing irrigation to new trees along the Canal. To utilize the water rights, the City must construct a well, well house, and water distribution system.
